Meet some of the superfoods for super health.

A large part of our nation requires prescription drugs to manage a slew of medical conditions such as dangerous weight gain, heart conditions, insulin complications, compromised immune systems and other serious ills that can shorten an otherwise healthy lifespan, which is why finding out about superfoods is so important.

Now that information about superfoods has been made public, thankfully people are taking heart and making changes for the better. We don't need to be on so many prescription pills when adding a few superfoods into your meals incorporates such delicious and healthy improvements.

A recent episode of the sitcom "Parks and Recreation" illustrated a process very well when the office staff sat around the table eating fitness bars marketed as the next big thing in healthy eating. The sugar high had them dancing around until the inevitable crash. Slumped in their desks they were unable to think straight. Sure it was just a skit on a sitcom, but the premise is very real, when you eat stuff that's bad for you, you feel bad.

The same is true for the opposite statement. The better the quality of your food, the better you feel and the quality of your work also goes up. This increases your productivity. Not your money's worth, but your time's worth. I don't know about you, but my time is very important to me. I speak from my own experience when I say that the more superfoods I consume, the better I feel. The more alert and alive I am, better able to concentrate and the more productive I become. My bank account has seen a change also. Do I mean to say that there's a correlation between my blueberries and my income? You bet your beans I do!

Let's meet some of the superfoods for super health:

1. Oranges: High in vitamin C, a nutrient that helps fight infections such as the common cold and flu by supporting the immune system.

2. Pumpkin: Beta Carotene (converts to vitamin A) is the hero in this fruit, and it's full of fiber which helps keeps the cholesterol numbers low, right where we want them!

3. Blueberries: All dark berries have anti-inflammatory properties that can help people who suffer from auto-immune disease.

4. Soy: Is there anything this little bean can't do? Substituting soy for dairy can prove to help stave off those dangerous growth hormones and saturated fats found in regular milk, reducing our risk for dangerous complications.

5. Spinach: This dark green is packed with calcium and iron. Don't forget it's also a great source of fiber. Seconds, please?

6. Legumes: High in iron and fiber, the colorful palette of beans makes for a beneficial addition to any recipe.

7. Walnuts: Rich in oils that lower the low-density cholesterol and raises the high-density cholesterol (the good stuff).

8. Tea: Teas serve as a diuretic adept at helping us shed water weight.

9. Tomatoes: Another fantastic source of vitamin C and antioxidants, tomatoes also pack a lot of lycopene, which is a helpful cancer fighting agent.

10. Oats: You've heard the expression healthy as a horse? Must be all those oats they eat, which are chock full of fiber, which lowers your risk of heart disease and contains both protein and iron.

This list is but the tip of the iceberg of foods that are good for you while tasting pretty darn good too. Happily, dark chocolate is on the longer list. As is red wine, and many of the nuts and seeds that we have always used for flavoring and texturing our favorite foods. Any food plan that includes nuts and all these wonderful things to eat AND increases my savings account is a plan that I can live very well on. Very well.
